What Causes Migraines?

December 22, 2008 by: admin

Migraines are more than just severe headaches, they also include a number of other symptoms including vision and hearing problems, loss of sense of smell and nausea and vomiting, and can be very debilitating while they last (anywhere between 2 to 72 hours).

The exact cause of migraines are not yet known, although research has linked them to disturbances in blood circulation in the brain, but a number of factors can trigger them including tiredness, stress, anxiety, alcohol, medication (such as contraceptive pill) and some foods. The additive monosodium glutamate (MSG) in particular has been linked to migraines, and is included in many manufactured foods such as crisps, dipping and table sauces, diet drinks and processed meats (sausages, chicken nuggets, canned ham etc).

Migraines are a serious condition and need to be diagnosed properly, so make an appointment with your doctor to discuss your symptoms in more depth, and this will help you to identify triggers and learn more about preventative medications.
