stop-excessive-sweatingExcessive sweating (Hyperhidrosis) is a common condition caused by overactive sweat glands, and it can be very unpleasant, making life uncomfortable for sufferers and limiting their social lives and even career prospects, and can also cause the skin to become sore and infected.

However there are some ways you can relieve this problem, so there is no need to suffer unnecessary, and you should speak to your doctor to get further advice before you try any treatments.

How to Stop Sweating Excessively

Mainstream products such as over the counter antiperspirants and deodorants simply are not powerful enough to provide effective relief from excessive sweating, and so you will need to look into more aggressive treatments such as:

  • Prescription antiperspirants – your doctor will be able to provide a strong antiperspirant such as aluminum chloride (brand names include Driclor® and Anhydrol Forte), which works by effectively blocking the sweat glands. Antiperspirants are only really effective on the armpit areas, as although it can be used on the hands and soles of the feet it does rub off quickly, lessening its effectiveness.  Also antiperspirants can be useful for excessive facial sweating, but you must be careful not to get it in your eyes or on the delicate mucus membranes of the mouth and nose, and as it is a very strong substance it can cause some irritation and so is not really recommended for this use.
  • Botulinum Toxin Injections (Botox) – this is an effective temporary measure for excessive sweating which can be useful if you have a special event or holiday planned and want to make sure that sweating does not ruin your time.  Basically Botox is injected into the affected areas and numbs the sweat glands so that they stop overacting and causing excessive sweating.  Botox is very effective on armpit sweating, but is not recommended for hand or facial sweating as it can numb some of the small surrounding muscles as well, which can cause problems with basic motor skills.  Botox can last for around 6 -12 months before the treatment needs repeating, and is not recommended for long term use as it can cause some side effects, and in a few rare cases people can experience a severe allergic reaction to the toxin.
  • Iontophoresis – this treatment is very effective for excessive sweating on the hands and feet and involves low electrical pulse stimulation that is designed to block the internal nervous system triggers that causes the sweat glands to overreact.  The electric pulse is introduced through a water bath and the feet or hands are immersed and then treated for around 20 -40 minutes and this must repeated every 1 to 3 weeks until the symptoms are relieved.  Unfortunately Iontophoresis does not work for everyone, and can cause a few side effects such as dizziness, pins and needles and a dry mouth for around 2 hours after each treatment.
