Home Treatment for Hives

January 12, 2009 by: admin

Hives are a type of rash that occurs when your body releases a chemical called histamine into your skin, which causes blood vessels to contract, allowing fluid to leak out and create a red lesion called a ‘flare’, which often contains a number of raised white spongy areas called ‘weals’. These flares and weals can be any shape and size, and depending on the severity of the hives will normally disappear on their own after a few minutes or hours.

Hives can occur for many reasons, as a reaction against something that touches the skin or is ingested, and also certain drugs such as thyroxine can cause hives to form sporadically. Hives can be very itchy and irritating, but if you scratch them they will just get even worse, and you could also break the skin resulting in painful infections.

The easiest and best way to calm hives is to gently rub a non-hypoallergenic moisturiser on the effected area, which will calm the skin and ease the itching. Moisturisers also prevent the skin from getting dry, which seems to make hives worse.
