If you suffer from mobility problems as you get older then you may find that your home is no longer as easy for you to get around as it once was, especially if you have stairs, steps or a steep garden/driveway. There are a number of home improvements you can make though that will increase the mobility access of your home, and this means you will not have to move out of your house when the stairs or steps get too much for you.

Seating

There are a number of manufacturers who make specialist chairs that can assist mobility impaired people to sit down and get up easily in their own homes, and these include electronically assisted chairs that will gently lift you up to a half standing position, which is ideal for those people with weakness in the hips, legs or arms, who find it difficult to lift themselves up from regular chairs. There are also a number of chairs available with additional lumbar support for those people suffering from back problems, which can be much more comfortable than more traditional seating in the home such as low, soft sofas and armchairs.

Trip Hazards

If you use a walking stick and are unsteady on your feet then you will need to look throughout your home and remove any potential trip hazards. This includes slippery, loose or uneven flooring, trailing cables, obstructive furniture and clutter on the floor (magazines, shoes, clothing etc). Make sure you have adequate lighting along corridors and anywhere there are changes in the surface levels, especially steps and stairs.

Stairs

If you have mobility problems than stairs can be a real challenge, as not only can they be difficult to walk up, but they can also be dangerous for you to walk down, with a high risk of slipping or falling and causing yourself serious injury. Therefore you should consider having a stairlift installed, which are designed with a simple rail system. With a stairlift you sit comfortable in the seat provided, and when you activate the stairlift the chair will move gently along the fitted rails taking you up and down the stairs. You can get both straight and Curved Stairlifts, so even if you have a quarter or half landing in your home you will still be able to benefit from this useful piece of equipment.

However there are some side effects caused by the various treatments on offer that could affect some users.

Inhaled Steroids
Inhaled steroids are effective for long term treatment of asthma and are made using substances that are naturally found in the human body, so most patients will not have any negative reactions to them. However there are a few mild side effects related to inhaled steroids, which include thrush (mouth and throat), dysphonia (vocal stress) and bronchospasms, which occur when the inhaler is used too vigorously.

Immunomodulators
These act directly on the immune system, and are mainly used for severe and persistent asthma that is causing a poor quality of life. This is a fairly new drug, which has recently been discovered to cause severe allergic reactions in one out of every thousand users. However this rate is so low, that most people will be able to use the drug without any problems.

Don’t forget to include some alternative treatments in your quest for back pain relief, as some of these can be surprisingly simple and effective such as:
* Flotation therapy – this is used to improve the healing process by encouraging patients to enter a deep sense of relaxation, which is achieved by immersion in a gravity free ‘floating’ environment. This is effective in relieving existing joint and muscles aches and pains and also helps to reduce stress, which can be a contributing factor to pain and slow healing.
* Acupuncture Work – acupuncture is very effective at pain relief, as the tiny needles that are inserted into the skin can be used to safely block or unblock natural energy pathways in the body, which can be very effective at relieving pain and boosting natural healing. Acupuncture sessions are also usually supported by Chinese herbal remedies, which can also be effective for treating back pain.
