Exercise can also help to relieve anxiety and control weight gain, and can also prevent pregnancy related constipation.

You should avoid taking part in any contact games, or sports where you may suffer a heavy fall including horse riding and off road mountain biking, and also avoid any exercise that pushes you too hard such as intensive aerobic or weight training workouts. Swimming and walking are gentle and effective ways to exercise during pregnancy, and you should aim to do no more than 30 minutes sessions at a medium pace two to three times a week, as long as you feel comfortable and are not experiencing any pains, dizzying or nausea.

It is common to sweat more during pregnancy, so make sure you drink plenty of water before, during and after exercise.

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) can relieve some of the symptoms of the menopause such as sweating, flushing and bone strength reduction, but it is not a contraceptive and so woman who are on HRT are still advised to continue using contraceptives for at least two years until after regular periods have stopped.

This is because occasional ovulation can still occur during this time, and although it is very unlikely you would become pregnant, there is a chance that a healthy egg could be fertilised during unprotected intercourse, leading to conception.

Standard oral combined hormonal and progestogen only contraception pills and can be used alongside HRT, as long as you have no other existing health problems, or alternatively you could ask your doctor about getting a intra-uterine progestogen-only device (Mirena coil) fitted.

Combinations of barrier contraception such as condoms and sponges can also be used during intercourse to prevent conception. HRT can lead to changes in the vagina, so barrier contraception should be used with lubricant (spermicidial) to prevent dryness and irritation.
